Spring 2025
Western Michigan University
In this class it is expected that students will do the following:
Spend adequate time on Math 2720. You should expect to spend at least 3-4 hours for each credit hour, 12-16 hours a week. Often more than 4 hours per credit hour is required to learn the material.
Read all assigned sections in the text and do all other assigned material.
Attempt all assigned homework problems.
Know what happens in class every day. Not all announcements will be posted on elearning.
Understand that for all solutions to homework and exam problems it is expected that students will clearly show how the answer was obtained. Techniques used should be from material that was covered before the assignment/exam was given. Important details must be included. To get full credit it is expected that the given answer is the correct answer.
Use the notation in the draft text. Any other notation may not be acceptable and may be counted as incorrect. Notation from other classes or from the web that is not consistent with the text will be counted as wrong.
All written assignments will be done through a dropbox in elearning. Submit all written assignments as a single PDF file containing the solutions to all of the assigned problems. The problems must be legible and in order of section and the numerical order, e.g. section 2.1 problem 1, section 2.1 problem 5, section 2.2 problem 2,... Your name must be in the name of the file. Do not use red or green in your assignment. All pages in your PDF must be the same size.
If a signed statement is required for the assignment, it is to be the first page of your submission with a written, not typed, signature. Do not submit a zip file. Your name must be in the name of the file. Make certain that you have clicked the submit button for the dropbox in e-learning.
Submit all Maple assignments as a single *.mw worksheet containing the solutions to all of the assigned problems. Each problem must be contained in a collapsible section with the problem number as the heading for the section. The problems must be in in numerical order, e.g. 1, 2,... Remove all output before submitting you worksheet, [ctrl]+D. Do not submit a zip file.
Ask questions in the class, in office hours, or by e-mail.
Read all comments on corrected papers.
Expectations of the instructor:
Make expectations clear.
Give and use a reasonable grading policy.
Get exams, quizzes, and homework back in a reasonable period of time. Hopefully, within 2 class days.
Be available to help students in office hours, via e-mail, and by appointment.
Allow student feedback, assessment, on the class throughout the semester.
Set a level of expectation that is adequate to prepare students for future classes. This needs to be attainable for students who are adequately prepared for Math 2720.
Give students direction on what material must be learned.
Reply to all e-mail with mathematics questions within 2 work days. Other questions that require decisions may take longer to answer.
